The name "Pigeon Forge" comes from an iron forge built by Isaac Love sometime around 1820 along the Little Pigeon River, which got its name from the flocks of Passenger Pigeons that lined the banks during the time of the first Euro-American settlers. For centuries, the Cherokee Indians used the Pigeon Forge valley as a hunting ground and part of their footpath is known as the Indian Gap Trail.
